A few months ago a wonderful journalist reached out to me from Women’s Health Magazine. She was based in the US and had felt compelled to write something about her experience of Yoga and how, in many ways, it has veered so far away from its roots.

Of all the articles, texts and teachings I’ve contributed to, this is possibly the most important. Finally, a mainstream magazine has given space to the idea that Yoga today is a far cry from what it originally set out to be.

           article

I made a few key points, but the one that I think most summarises what I feel is that Yoga, especially when taught years ago in India, was minimal, disciplined and in many ways hard. It was ‘simple and stripped back’, as the main reason we practice Yoga is to connect with our own energy and a higher power. It was simply a matter of meditating, and practicing, meditating and practicing. Now we have become so enamoured with yoga clothes, props, accessories etc that many have forgotten the entire reason behind what we do why we do. Teachers would spend years training their students, without even any promise that they would become a teacher at all. It was the studying, the learning and the inner evolution of that student which was the way of Yoga.

I believe that teachers play a huge role in holding on to the essence of Yoga. It isn’t about making it exclusive, far from it. But Yoga is a science. It takes many years to learn the basics, and a lifetime on top of that to continuing progressing and evolving.

If we could just take our time, teach students in the right way by helping them to evolve as people first, we have a chance of holding on to the absolute gift that Yoga is - a way of life, that changes your life.

The pain Covid has caused that we’re not talking about

The one thing Covid has damaged that the media isn’t even talking about

So much of the news agenda and conversations around Covid covers the spread of the pandemic, how it’s impacting our work life, the economy, education .. the list goes on.

But as a friend and a Yoga teacher to people, the conversations I’ve had the most with people in the last six months are centred on one topic: relationships.

Covid has placed us firmly in the spotlight of one another. It has shone a light on each of us as individuals, and on our relationships. There has literally been no place to hide. And let’s be honest. It’s been painful.

Whether you live with your mum and dad, partner, kids, or on your own, there hasn’t been a more intense time than this to see our relationships as what they are.

And as a result, we have seen the very best, and the worst, in each of us.

This situation is further warped by an obsession many people have to present their lives as perfect through social media. It is an utterly strange situation when we really think about it.

Recently I have seen many marriages and relationships break. If this applies to you, remember one thing. You haven’t failed. However long you have been in a relationship, and however it is that you’re exiting out of it, you have not failed. We are going through extraordinary times, and no matter what you may think or feel right now, Covid has escalated a path that you were likely walking anyway. As much as it has been a curse, it has also been a great blessing. Equally, if Covid has brought you closer, that’s a wonderful thing. So celebrate it.

Whichever side of the fence you sit on, or if you’ve simply struggled to be single, remember that our relationships are there to help us to grow. The people we have in our lives are there because often, we have something to learn from them or we have something to teach them. When that process is done, when your karmic connection is complete, that specific relationship will end.

Today, on International Yoga Day, I wanted to share one piece of advice that was given to me a while back which has helped me, both with the relationships I have with myself, and with others. Hold on to this principle when speaking to one another:

          No comparisons

          No complaints

          No criticisms

Naturally, your energy will become more positive, you will speak over more meaningful topics and your will allow space for your reactions to be calmer. Don’t be afraid to seek help if you need it. Our relationships play such a big part in our life. No one has got it all right.

          Happy International Yoga Day. Namaste.

Top 10 books for mental health and spiritual exploration

I get asked this question a lot – any books you would recommend as part of my Yoga practice? The truth is that over the years I have been inspired by many scriptures, all philosophies and all ways of practicing Yoga. I was raised as a Hindu, went to a Roman Catholic School, studied the Bible, have great friends who are Muslim and one of my favourite Yoga teachers is Jewish! I don’t believe that one system fits everyone – I believe there are beautiful teachings across all faiths and philosophies and if we seek to understand differences, they eventually become similarities. Books have been my solace, my friend, my teacher and my guide for as long as I can remember. So here are my recommendations on books I would recommend for you to read, regardless of your belief systems or style of Yoga practice:

Please note these are in no particular order and they do not relate so much to physical Yoga practice. I’ll create a separate list for that:

           1.	The Bhagavad Gita – Swami Prabhupada:

At the heart of these Hindu scriptures is a core teaching of being even-minded regardless of what happens in your life. The teachings describe – through a conversation of Lord Krishna and Warrior Arjuna – how Yoga, Meditation and Good Living can help us to conquer the mind and make decisions wisely. An absolutely beautiful read and life-long companion.

           2.	Tao De Ching [The Book of The Way] - Lao Tzu

There are many versions of the Chinese scriptures, but my favourite is by Lao Tzu. Loosely meaning ‘The way of integrity’, this book of 81 verses contains thought-provoking teachings on how to live simply and without expectation. If there’s a book that highlights the power of spiritual simplicity, it’s definitely this one.

           3.	I Am That – Talks with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

This book is a no holds barred conversation with Sri Maharaj which will encourage you to look within yourself. There isn’t a book out there which has made me realise more that the process of self-realisation truly begins within. The ability to deconstruct your thoughts, beliefs, and to probe all the concepts you believe to be true and question them deeply is in many ways the most powerful thing one can do for the mind. As it is only from there can we begin to reconstruct who we really are. It’s not a light-hearted read but it is the kind of book where the right 2 sentences can totally change the way you think.

           4.	The Gift – Poems by Hafiz, translated by Daniel Ladinsky

For the romantics amongst you and if you have a love of Rumi’s teachings, The Gift, by Hafiz, will make you laugh, smile, have faith, chuckle and feel moved in one sitting. It’s written in a way that only Sufi poets can, with a gentleness to its words which will stay with you for a very long time.

           5.	The Dhammapada by Eknath Eashwaran

The late great Eashwaran was a Master at translating religious scriptures and interpreting them in a way that we can really understand. His teachings can be found in written books and audiobooks, both of which I’d recommend. His interpretation of the Buddhist scriptures – the Dhammapada – is a very special read as it covers topics which we can often shy away from and explains them in such a reassuring way. Look no further if you need some comfort reading for your soul.

           6.	The World in Transition by Daya Mata and Paramahansa Yogananda

One of my very first books as I began my spiritual journey, it is extraordinary how despite being written over 20 years ago, how relevant the topics covered in this book are today. Yogananda was one of the very first Yogis to introduce Yoga to America, especially to California, and Sri Daya Mata was a disciple and teacher of Yogananda’s movement. If you’re wondering why things are happening the way they are in this world today, this offers a little spiritual insight which you’ll surely find useful.

           7.	Ikigai – The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life by Garcia and Miralles

Inspired by Japanese principles, ways of living and case studies of people who have lived a long and happy life, this book, though light to read, gently encourages you to think about they way in which you’re living your life. It is beautifully subtle but resonates very deeply. Though written very recently, this book is already an international bestseller and I can see why. It will also make a wonderful gift for a friend of family member.

           8.	Around the World in 80 Plants – Jonathan Drori

If you know me you’ll know how much I love the magic of gardening. I recently came across this beautifully illustrated book, which highlights 80 plants while explaining their history in an often surprising and humorous way. It is written with such tenderness and clarity – and will make you see all sorts of flowers and plants in a completely different way. This book simply reaffirms to me that Nature is magical, beautiful and we are such a big part of it all. If you want to feel closer or more connected to the world, get this book as quickly as you can.

           9.	Stepping into Happiness – Dadi Janki

My mother gave me this book a few years back, and it is one that I have only recently truly started to understand deeply. It offers, in my view, the best explanation of what depression means, and how to handle it. Dadi Janki, the late great leader of the Brahma Kumaris Global Spiritual University, was a force to be reckoned with. She worked, travelled and gave talks right until the very last moments of her life. She died at 104 years old. And yes, you read that right.

           10.	God Makes the Rivers to Flow – Eknath Eashwaran

Eknath Eashwaran collates prayers and teachings from a wide range of religions and philosophies in this absolutely beautiful book. I have had it for at least 10 years, I found my favourite ever prayer in it’s first few pages years ago and I still use it regularly today. Get your hands on a copy even if you don’t pray much at all. I’m pretty sure there’ll be something in there that resonates to you.

Here are the links of the copies I have. I really hope you find as much joy and peace in these books as I have.

Your Emotional Diet

There's so much content online about healthy living when it comes to exercise and food. But what about our minds? What we consume in our minds - from what we watch or who we are exposed to regularly - forms our emotional diet. And many people are facing emotional burnout because of the junk we consume. This then impacts the way we think. Here are some suggestions which might help you to recoup energy and feel less of the ‘burn out’:

          1. No checking of phones first thing in the morning and at night

          2. Less time on social media replaced with reading of uplifting literature or podcasts

          3. Meditation or mindful breathing for 5mins each morning

          4. Positive affirmation at the top of each day e.g. I am at peace or I am content - and avoidance of negative affirmation e.g. I am angry or I am depressed. Repeating affirmations throughout the day will strengthen the intention and eventually will become the new normal.

          5. Good sleep or if sleep is disrupted, some form of gentle movement or exercise to relax. Fast paced thinkers will find this hard, in which case it's even more important to do.

What we feel comes through what we see and consume. These form thoughts. These thoughts form our reality. Try these tips for a number of days and see how you feel. Eventually, your energy will recover, and some balance will be restored.

Trump and Corona Virus. Is it Karma?

There is an awful lot in the news about President Trump and The First Lady Melania Trump contracting Corona Virus. Many people are saying it is ‘Karma’. Karma simply means action. It is the law of action. All of your actions, good or bad, will have an impact. As you sow, so you reap. Good actions will produce positive effects, bad actions will produce negative effects.

However, the law of Karma is not to be understood as fatalism. It is not The Universe, a superpower or God punishing you or rewarding you. It is simply you punishing yourself if you choose evil actions, or freeing yourself through right action.

The effects of your Karma – especially negative effects, can be burned through dedicated Yoga and Meditation practice. To become aware of your actions is the first step. Then working with the power of meditation and silence, a deeper understanding of yourself can emerge. From there, you can, at the very least, make your actions positive from then on.

As for celebrating the fact they – or anyone - has Corona Virus, as hard as it is, try not to. Even if they have done so much wrong. Inflicting or celebrating illness in another adds to the pain and suffering that is already so plentiful in this world. Your energy is powerful. Use it for good. Act on what you want to change, and help others change for the better too.

Before you get a dog, read this.

It is not lost on me that for the most part, my social media following is down to one thing – Xena. Our beautiful Doberman / Weimeraner Cross. Because of her, many of you ask me for my thoughts on getting a dog and which one to go for. When you see the connection between a dog and its hoooman (sic), it is completely natural to want one too. Here are some things to think about if you / your family are thinking about it.

To set some context, my husband and I were not ready to have a dog full time when we met Xena around 7 years ago. We actually went on a website called Borrow My Doggy.com where dog lovers and dog owners can be paired to help each other out. Sounds a bit like a weird dating site, but actually it’s a pretty neat idea. We were both working in the city and couldn’t take on the full responsibility.

I remember my husband (my boyfriend at the time) seeing a picture of Xena and that was it. He was hooked on her. I remember looking at her thinking ‘crikey, she’s a bit big’. But nonetheless, I reached out to the owners.

A few days later, I got a whatsapp message from my husband with a picture of him and Xena in his flat. She had actually just jumped up on the worktop and licked all the butter from the tub. I met her and the owners a couple of days later. The rest, as they say, is history.

We’ve learned a lot from having Xena, so I thought it would be helpful to share a few things that we’ve picked up along the way, especially if you’re thinking about getting one.

           1.	Know your own personality before choosing your dog.

If it is not in your nature to lead, or be outdoors, or if you don’t have a huge amount of time to train a dog, avoid a breed which is known to be strong, stubborn or who needs a lot of mental stimulation. Dogs such as Alsatians and Dobermans have to be walked approx. 1-2hrs a day but importantly also need a lot of mental stimulation. They are smart. Xena has learned to open doors from the inside, pulling the door towards her. They look and they learn very quickly. If that energy isn’t channelled, your dog can become destructive and potentially dangerous. If you have young children, a dog can be their best friend – but their personalities have to be matched. Your kids need to command the dog as much as you do, or all your hard work will go down the pan. Breeds such as retrievers or Labradors are good family dogs as they are docile, but they still need to know who calls the shots. It is a common mistake to think that ‘family dogs’ don’t need much command. A Labrador will eat you out of house and home if you don’t train it early on to keep away from the kitchen table!

           2.	Be prepared for your dog’s individuality.

Dogs are like people in many ways. They have personalities, characters, they respond to things differently. They change as they get older. And they’re not all social. They don’t all like to be around other dogs or people and they don’t always like every being they come across. Xena, for example, had bad experiences in her puppy years so she is fearful of other dogs coming too close. She is not, however, one to start a fight. She just likes her own company and it takes her time to feel comfortable around others. After some time, she can be your best friend, but it is never instant. Just like people, dogs have their own ways and you won’t always discover this early on. Try not to fixate on what your perfect dog will be like. Just like us, they change and have their own ways.

           3.	Whatever time you think you’re going to need to invest in a dog, double it.

Dogs get sick, they have problems, they need your attention, they need looking after when you’re not there. It takes a lot to plan around a dog even if you’re going out for the day. A walk a day may seem manageable, but if you have young children and it’s raining, it takes time to get everything together, go for a walk, come back and keep to routine. Just think about the day to day activities and prepare to put a lot of time in to keeping your dog happy and healthy.

           4.	Ask yourself if this is the right time in your life to get a dog.

We adopted Xena as she was destined for the dog shelter. The previous owners loved her, but their circumstances changed in the years they had her. They went from being a couple, to a family of four, and experiencing health and life difficulties which made it hard for them to cope. I’ll be honest, I used to think ‘how can anyone just discard their dog?’. But life can throw up so many challenges and a dog needs a lot of time and attention. We took Xena on and it’s the best thing we did. But for the previous owners it was a heart wrenching thing to do partly because their life had been so different when they first took her on. She had needs they could no longer meet. And that was a very difficult realisation for them to come to. Luckily, they didn’t have go through dropping her at a shelter, but for most people, that is a very, very hard thing to do.

           5.	Consider a rescue.

People often make the mistake of thinking that rescue dogs have something wrong with them. Often, if you speak to the shelters, they will tell you that the dogs are there for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes owners have to move or lose their jobs so can’t afford to keep their dogs. Sometimes owners have passed away. Sometimes the dog is just not right for their personality. That doesn’t mean they’re not right for you. Also, with most rescue dogs, you will often know upfront if they have behavioural or health issues so you know what you’re taking on. If you take on a puppy, behavioural issues can emerge 1, 2, 3 years into their life. Go and visit some shelters – you’ll be surprised how many beautiful dogs just need a home and could become your best friend.

           6.	Get your financials straight.

Dogs live on average to 8-12 years. Over that time, you will have to budget for vet insurance, food (Xena has a stomach issue which means we have to pay more for food which is better for her), dog sitters, medicines, toys, blankets, beds, towels, everything. I can’t seem to go into a store without buying Xena a little toy or gift. It happens ;) Do your calculations looking ahead, not just in terms of where you’re at now.

           7.	Learn about allergies and environmental factors which might suit you and your dog.

In the early days, we had no idea that dogs are allergic to grapes … until my husband decided to give her a couple and we ended up in A & E! Most dogs don’t do well with chocolate either, but sometimes there are also products in your home that you use every day which don’t suit animals. Disinfectants, cleaning products, air fresheners .. these things can trigger reactions in dogs inadvertently, so have a look online and do some research before you bring your dog home. There are dogs which are hypoallergenic breeds too, which might be helpful to know if any members of your family have asthma. Also know that some dogs get really scared of fireworks or certain sounds. If you live in an area where Diwali is celebrated for example, prepare for 2 weeks of fireworks as Bonfire Night is often at the same time. Vets can prescribe medicines for extreme cases but it can often mean sleepless nights if your dog is really scared. Think about your home space too. Huskies need a lot of range. They are beautiful, but they are working dogs and are used to pulling sleds for 2- 4 hours a day. If that energy isn’t drained, they will jump fences, run away and become very unhappy very quickly. If you only have a small garden and 30mins a day to walk a dog, a husky, for example, may not be for you.

           8.	Get used to poo.

Dogs poo. A lot. And you have to pick it up. They also wee, they get sick, they have diarrhoea, they eat weird things and they go through phases of favourite strange things to eat too .. Xena ate socks when she was little and now her fascination, at the age of 11, has returned so we have had to fish stuff out of her mouth sometimes. Part of having a dog is just not very pleasant. But it has to be taken care of .. by everyone in the family.

I realise that this article may have made you question whether having a dog is right for you. I’m glad if it has, as it is not a decision to be taken lightly.

However, with all the difficulties and challenges that come, a dog can enrich your life like nothing else.

Xena has taught me how to be in the moment, how to love freely, without condition, and how to forgive. She makes me smile when I least feel like it. Her innocence and her way of being is just beautiful to be a part of. If you do get the chance to experience it, knowing all the challenges that may come, never pass it up. A dog is truly man’s best friend.

No Bake Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bites

This recipe is great if you feel like eating something chocolate-y, healthy and filling! These Protein Bites are super easy to make and don’t need to be baked either. They keep really well in the fridge – usually for about a week or two – and they can be made gluten free by using gluten free oats too.

Time to make: 20mins. 16 servings

           Ingredients

          :

          3 cups of rolled oats

2 tablespoons of maple syrup (honey works too if that’s all you have!)

2 cup peanut butter (or any other nut butter is fine)

4 scoops Chocolate Protein Powder (check out the Vegan Bare Necessities post for our recommendations)

          ½ cup dessicated coconut (optional)

½ bar of dark chocolate (I use salted dark chocolate but you can use any you like)

           Method

          1.	Line a 10 x 10 pan with greaseproof paper and set aside.

          2.	Take a large mixing bowl and mix in your rolled oats together with the protein powder.

          3.	In a small pan on the stove, mix together your peanut butter and maple syrup on a low heat for about 5 minutes. Mix until it’s melted together, be careful not to put on too high a heat or the syrup will become sticky.

          4.	Mix together the wet and dry mixtures – use a spoon as the wet mixture will be hot. Then add half a cup of warm water and mix until it becomes a doughy mixture / batter.

          5.	Pour the mixture in to the lined pan and press firmly in to place. Press into the corners properly so that you get proper squares when you cut them later.

          6.	Sprinkle some of the coconut on top if you’re using it and place the pan in the fridge. Leave to set for 15mins.

          7.	While they’re setting, melt the dark chocolate either in a microwave (low heat) or a ban-marie (heating the chocolate in a bowl which is placed on top of a pan with hot water underneath to effectively steam melt the chocolate).

          8.	Take the protein batter out of the fridge and using a palette knife, evenly spread the chocolate over the top of the batter. Aim for about an half inch layer – this creates a nice crunch when the chocolate is cold.

          9.	Place back in the fridge for at least 30minutes. I’ve found these often taste better the next day once they’ve completely set.

          10.	Cut in to squares and sprinkle with coconut before serving. Perfect with a cup of tea!

This is an absolute hit in our house. My mum used to love eating these .. so I made her a special batch and I got a big thumbs up. My sis in law had them with ice cream and my little nephew enjoyed them too. As for Mr Morj, this was a time he LOVED being chief taster. I’ve made these a few times now.

They’re really simple to make and don’t take much cooking know how at all.

1 tbsp vegan margarine (Flora is fine)

2 apples (I used Royal Gala as cooking apples take longer and are more bitter)

          2 tbsp granulated sugar

          1 tsp vanilla extract

          1/2 tbsp lemon juice

1/2 tsp cinnamon powder (I add extra as I love them cinnamon)

          1 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch)

1 sheet puff pastry – Just Roll Ready Made Puff Pastry is PERFECT

          2 tsp maple syrup

          2 tsp sunflower oil

          1.	Remove the pastry from the fridge and leave to one side

          2.	Remove apple cores, then peel and roughly dice apples into 1cm pieces. Add the apples to the saucepan along with the granulated sugar, vanilla extract, lemon juice and cinnamon powder. Stir to combine and cook for 10 minutes until the apples have softened.

          3.	Add the vegan margarine to a saucepan over a medium heat and let it melt

          4.	Meanwhile, combine the cornflour with 3 tbsp of cold water to form a paste then add it to the saucepan, stir, and cook through for 3 minutes. When the apples are ready remove them from the heat and transfer to a bowl so they cool quicker.

          5.	Preheat the oven to 200°C / 390°F fan assisted.

          6.	Meanwhile prepare the vegan egg wash by combining the maple syrup and vegetable oil in a small mixing bowl. Next, roll out the pastry, then slice it into quarters. Then slice each quarter in half lengthways so you’re left with 8 rectangles.

          7.	Once the apples have fully cooled, spoon a quarter of the mixture down the middle of 4 of the pastry rectangles, leaving 1/2cm clear around the edges. Brush the edges with the vegan egg wash.

          8.	Cover the apple mixture with another rectangle of pastry and seal the edges with your fingers. Next crimp the edges with a fork and use a knife to cut a few slits in the top.

          9.	Brush the top of the pastry with the vegan egg wash and sprinkle a little more sugar over the top.

          10.	Bake for 15-25 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown all over. If you’re gifting them or eating them later in the day, leave 5 minutes at the end of cooking time so that your loved ones can pop them in the oven for 5 minutes before eating – they taste best warm!

Saucha

A Yogic teaching which helps with isolation. There is a beautiful principle within Yogic Philosophy which is called SAUCHA. This is a Sanskrit word which means Purity or Cleanliness. This principle, which is one of the NIYAMAS or Personal Yogic ‘Codes of Conduct’, refer to purity or cleanliness … of thought, action, mind, body and soul.

It has been in my mind especially given recent developments with Corona Virus. We are rightfully concerned about the external forces which are driving this virus but very little attention has been given to how we, as individuals, can cope and handle this type of problem. Just as we focus on who we are allowing in and out of an airport, so we must observe what we let in to our minds, body and soul … especially if we want to have as strong an immune system as possible.

This is where Saucha has really helped me. The more I study it, the more it plays out in my life practically and positively.

Here are some simple ways which you might find incorporating Saucha in to your life, especially at this time:

          1. Declutter: Your environment is a reflection of your mind and vice versa. Every now and again, purge parts of our home - paperwork, or the kitchen, or clothes etc. And do it regularly. This ensures that physically, dust and debris is cleared from the air; emotionally we can let go of old energy and reminders of the past which can trigger negative memories or thoughts; and mentally, we create more space in the mind to think clearly and wisely. It’s also a great way to spend spare time if you’re in isolation at the moment.

          2. Fresh air: Where possible, allow fresh air into your home and in your environment and / or take walks regularly. This helps to keep the air in your home (and lungs) pure and light, and also helps to keep your respiratory and circulatory systems healthy. If you do have symptoms or have a cold though, keep your chest warm with a scarf or jumper so as to not worsen your condition.

          3. Move. Every Day. Movement is Medicine. Whether it’s a few stretches or postures in the morning or a full on HIIT workout - whatever it is, do not become stagnant. Movement helps the body and organs to detoxify and importantly, will make you feel more positive due to the release of happy hormones!

          4. Drink Water. Of course this won’t be news to you. But did you know that according to Yoga teachings, water actually becomes energy (or CHI or PRANA) once consumed - so it directly impacts how much energy or ’spark’ you may have. Room temperature water is good - nothing too hot and nothing too cold - as it won’t disrupt your internal temperatures.

          5. Be careful what you consume .. and I don’t mean just food. Eat your greens, and dark coloured veggies (these will tend to be richer in nutrients). AND, watch out for what your mind is consuming. It is easy to get distracted by the endless news feeds or social media conversation. Some of it is important but for the most part it, it’s just opinion or thoughts or sensationalist headlines which are designed to get your attention. What we let in to our minds directly impacts our nervous system. And what impacts our nervous system will also impact the immune system. Instead, consume information which is uplifting or truly informative.

          6. Be kind. There is something strange about how obsessive we can become about running out of food or loo roll .. especially when so many people don’t have access to goods so freely, or are vulnerable. Find a food bank and give them what you don’t need. Don’t overbuy unnecessarily and check in on your friends and neighbours, especially if they’re elderly or may need extra support.

I’m not for a moment suggesting that all of this will prevent the virus from spreading. I hope that at the very least, it is a reminder of your own inner strength and of the power of positive habits. Stay on your track. Keep a good routine. Ignore the unnecessary hype. Be kind. Move regularly. And eat well. These are all things which will help, on the inside and out!

Which Yoga Mat?

One of the questions I get asked almost every day is, “I need to get a new Yoga mat. Which would you recommend?” So, here are my top tips and recommendations!

A good Yoga mat can make or break your practice. I’ve seen people practice on thick, slippery gym mats which don’t stay firm on the floor and make it virtually impossible to practice any classic postures such as Downward Dog. It can make you think you’re not good at Yoga, and give up before you’ve even begun!

If you’re in the market for a good Yoga mat, here are the some of my personal tips, which may just help:

          1.	Thickness. In my experience, the thinner the better. The thicker mats are good for people who have joint issues or injuries, but generally, thinner mats make for a better, more traditional practice. The thinner mats also tend to slip less.

          2.	Material. Try to go for a sustainable material which doesn’t contain PVC. Most standard mats do have PVC, otherwise known as Vinyl. However, many newer mats are made of natural and recycled rubber, jute and natural cotton. If you’re allergic to latex, avoid mats made of natural rubber. The more expensive mats do often have a good underlay so the mats stick to the floor a bit more – very helpful for when you’re going to a vinyasa class.

          3.	Cleanability: Go for darker colours and materials which are easy to clean. Many Yoga mats can be put through the wash but double check this, as trust me, even with the cleanest of feet, your mat is going to get dirty!

The mats I have used and would recommend are:

          1.

            Liforme

          Price Point: £80-100

Definitely top range when it comes to price, but it’s a GREAT mat which is made from sustainable material, has lines on to help you practice better and works for slower and faster practices too.

          2.

            Manduka Pro Lite

          Price Point: £50-85

I had a Manduka mat for years and it’s still in great condition. It’s durable, made of sustainable material and can be cleaned easily. Would highly recommend if you’re looking at something mid range

            Warrior Mat

          Price Point: £20-30

My first mat and it worked an absolute treat. It comes in great colours – I had mine in a flame orange – and it’s very reasonably priced!

1 teaspoon of crushed or sliced ginger

2 packs of Udon Noodles (usually 1 pack serves 2 so increase if you need to)

One cup of edamame beans – these can be from frozen or replace with peas

          A handful of coriander

          3 tablespoons of Soya Sauce

2 Red Peppers cut into cubes

Half a cup of grated carrots

1 tablespoon of peanut butter (optional)

Fresh red chilli (optional, to taste)

          2 tablespoons of Sriracha Sauce

          Sesame seeds (optional)

           Method

          1.	In a pan, heat the sesame oil on a medium heat for approx. 1 minute.

          2.	Then add the garlic and ginger (and chilli if you’re using), keeping on a medium heat for another minute.

          3.	Add the edamame beans and red peppers and leave for 3-4 minutes on a medium heat to cook through. You want them to stay firm and crunchy so if your peppers are on their way out, reduce this time a little bit.

          4.	Add the peanut butter, sriracha and soya sauce, stir and simmer for approx. 5 minutes. Add a little warm water if it starts to stick to the pan.

          5.	Remove the content from the frying pan and place in a separate bowl.

          6.	In the same frying pan (don’t wash it, you want some of the flavours to come through), add the noodles with approx. ½ cup of water. They should sizzle and then soften. Most Udon noodles will take no more than 5minutes to cook through but check your packet as they do vary.

          7.	Once cooked through, place the noodles on one side of a a serving bowl

          8.	On the other side of the bowl, place the edamame peppers

          9.	You can stir together, or keep separate depending on what you prefer

          10.	Sprinkle with coriander and sesame seeds before serving and add sriracha on top if you like your food spicy!

Mamas Corn Curry

During our Italy Retreat in 2018, my lovely Mum decided to take over the kitchen for the day and made an absolute feast of home cooked Indian food. We had limited ingredients, but what we did have were tins of corn. So mum decided to make her legendary corn curry. This recipe is quick, easy to make, healthy and delicious.

Time to make: 30mins. Serves 4.

           Ingredients

          :

          1 tbs of sunflower oil

          2 tins of sweetcorn (248g)

Tomato puree or half a tin of chopped tomatoes

2 cups course ground red peanuts

          1 green chilli (optional)

          Red chilli powder (to taste)

          1 tsp of Salt

          1tsp of mustard seeds

          ¼ tsp Turmeric

          1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 tablespoons of SMASH mash potato powder

          A handful of chopped coriander

           Method

NB if you’re having this recipe with rice, don’t forget to put the rice on while you’re cooking so you get everything done at the same time!

          1.	In a pan, add the oil and the mustard seeds on a medium heat.

          2.	When the seeds start to pop, add the tomatoes and all the spices.

          3.	Mix it all for a couple of mins on a medium heat and add the lemon juice.

          4.	When it becomes a light, paste-like consistency, add the corn, stirring in slowly.

          5.	Then add the peanuts and bring to a boil. Once boiled, turn down the heat and add the mash potato – this acts as a thickener for the sauce so add slowly and stop when you’re happy with the consistency.

          6. It should be fairly thick. Keep on a low heat for about 5minutes to allow the flavours to blend together.

          7.	Then pop the curry in to a dish and sprinkle with coriander.

          8.	Serve with rice

          – they’re quick and easy for a snack. NB Not all Quorn products are vegan – many have egg in them so look out for the green Vegan sign on packaging if you’re unsure.

          – we love the smoked version but you can get plain too.

           Yoghurt

            :

Aldi has a great Vegan Yoghurt which is 89p – the brand is

            SoYummy

          . Tesco

            free from plain yoghurt

is also good. They are naturally a bit sweeter so if you like your yoghurt tangy just add some lemon juice to it.

What to have in your cupboard

           Oats

            :

Not just for breakfast, oats are used in a lot of Vegan recipes!

           Wheat Gluten Flour

: This is essential if you’re going to make Seitan. Available via Holland and Barrett but we order ours in bulk from Amazon

           Nutritional Yeast

: A great cheesy mix which is high in Vitamin D. Used a lot in making cheese alternatives but also as part of recipes e.g. for the bechamel sauce in Lasagne. Most stores stock, including

            Holland and Barrett

          .

           Protein Powder

            :

          My favourite is

            Nuzest Clean Lean Vegan Protein

BUT it does have a price tag. The wild strawberry flavour is lush though. We also use

            Sci Max Vegan Protein

which is good too, and more reasonable. It’s just a bit more carby and a slightly different flavour to Nuzest.

           Bouillion

          :	A

            salty stock

which adds flavour to stews, soups and sauces.

           Chocolate Spread

          :

            Biona

. It’s divine. And palm oil free.

Soya Milk Long Life	Keep a couple of cartons in your stock cupboard

. Many recipes – from pastries and cakes, to pasta sauces require some form of vegan milk and these are quite easy to and cheap to keep around.

           Peanut butter

          :

            Whole earth dark roast

is very special. Most stores stock it.

It’s also handy to have cans of chickpeas, kidney beans, some dry lentils and mung beans. Also stock up on garlic, ginger chilli powder, soya sauce, sesame oil, olive oil, turmeric powder, coriander powder and garam masala which are great in cooking,

If there’s one recipe that makes me very popular in our household it’s this one. Inspired by

           Gaz Oakley’s Avant Garde recipe

, this honestly has only one or two changes that are mainly down to personal taste, and it’s an absolute winner.

Including allowing the bread to stand this recipe will take approx. 2 hours to make.

3 Bunches of Vine Cherry Tomatoes

          2 Sprigs of Fresh Rosemary

          Handful of Fresh Basil

          1/2 cup Mixed Olives

          Olive Oil

           Method

          :

          1.	In a jug take 1 ½ cup full of luke warm water and add the yeast. Add 2 tbs olive oil and 2 tbs of maple syrup. Mix and leave to stand for 10mins.

          2.	Then in a bowl, take the flour, add a tsp of salt and stir in the jug of water, yeast, olive oil and maple syrup.

          3.	Stir it in slowly and bring together with the hands, creating a dough.

          4.	Turn out the dough on a clean surface and start to knead. If it feels too wet add a little bit of flour. Knead for about 4-5mins.

          5.	Put the dough back in to the bowl (coat with a bit of olive oil to stop from sticking) and cover with a damp towel. Leave for about 1 hour in a warm place or overnight for dough to double in size.

          6.	Take the dough and place on a clean surface. Add a little bit of flour to stop the dough from sticking on the surface and knead very gently for a couple of minutes

          7.	Take a baking tray (line lightly with flour or greaseproof paper) and flatten the dough in to a ‘rustic’ focaccia shape which looks rounded and rectangular.

          8.	Leave for another 30mins, covering with a damp cloth.

          9.	While the dough is proving, prepare the cherry tomatoes, keeping the vine for decoration, and the basil, rosemary, and olives. In a separate bowl add 4 tps of olive oil, some salt and the crushed garlic to make a garlic oil

          10.	Preheat the oven to 180degrees.

          11.	Take the dough, remove the towel and using your fingers create small grooves for the tomatoes and olives to be placed in. Press the tomatoes and olives deeply inside each groove and pop the rosemary and tomato vines in the dough by ‘stabbing’ them in. Take the garlic oil and put drops of the oil all over the top of the bread for extra flavour. Sprinkle rock salt, chilli flakes and smoked paprika over top.

          12.	Place the focaccia in the oven for approx 30-35mins at 180deg.

          13.	Check and see if the bread is golden and risen. Place back in the oven if need be but don’t take the bread in and out too many times as it makes the bread flat.

          14.	Leave to stand for approx. 10mins.

          15.	Place on a wooden chopping board and serve with olive oil, balsamic vinegar or to accompany soup or pasta!

          Enjoy!

           For	the	custard:

Warm	the	dairy	free	milk	in	a	pan	and	warm	it	to	a	simmer. Add	the	sugar	and	vanilla	to	the	pan	and	stir	everything	together. Gradually	add	the	cornstarch	to	the	warm	milk,	whisking	constantly	to	form	a	thick	custard-like	liquid. Add	the	turmeric	to	the	custard	and	stir	it	in	so	the	colour	is	perfect.

            Here	we	go.

            Vegan	Masala	Chai	Serves	1

            You’ll	need:

            Tea	masala

1	cup	milk	of	your	choice-	I	like	50%	oatly	and	50%	koko	coconut	milk

2–3	teaspoons	(or	more	or	less)	maple	syrup,	sugar	or	alternative.

NB	For	those	who	don’t	have	pre	prepared	chai	masala	you	can	make	your	own	in	a	grinder	using:

           5–7	peppercorns	(optional)

            How to make

             1.	In	a	pan	add	one	cup	of	milk	to	pan	on	medium	heat	-	I	use	50%	oatly	milk	and	50%	koko	coconut	milk	for	the	right	consistency	–	not	too	heavy	and	not	too	light

             2.	Add	one	spoon	of	loose	tea	or	tear	a	tea	bag

             3.	Add	1	heaped	tsp	chai	masala

             4.	Add	sugar

             5.	Bring	to	boil	(one	to	two	times	-	the	more	you	do	this	the	stronger	the	tea)

             6.	Let	simmer	for	2-3	minutes

             7.	Add	the	fresh	ginger	and	mint	and	simmer	for	1	minute.

             8.	Before	serving	add	1/4	teaspoon	sugar	and	1/4	teaspoon	chai	masala	to	bring	out	the	flavours.

Serve	in	your	favourite	mug	(through	a	tea	sieve)	and	enjoy	with	biscuits	or	parathas!

           Enjoy!
